Karen Cham FRSA is Professor of Digital Transformation Design at the University of Brighton and University Lead for the research theme ‘Connected Futures’ including Digital Economy, Digital Health, Immersive Media, and Smart Cities.
She is co-lead of Digital Catapult Centre Brighton’s ‘5G Brighton’ Testbed project, in partnership with 5GIC as part of the UKGovts 5G Strategy and P.I on ESIFs £1.1m ‘Digital Research & Innovation Value Accelerator’ using Gatwick airports proprietorial data, and leads the Digital Catapult B2B Data Research & Innovation Lab.
She has 25 years experience in human centred design for Next Gen digital including iOS, Android, Windows, Cloud, Xbox, Playstation, Drones, sensor tech, biometrics inc. eye tracking, facial recognition, EEG, EMG, GSR digital audio and video, MIDI, haptics, holography, stereoscopy, AR, VR, computer vision, neuro-marketing & neuro-gaming machine learning, predictive analytics, big data, automatic signal recognition, cognitive and sentient systems and designs AIs. Clients have included Playstation, Top Shop and EY.
She has written and run three UX Masters programmes and alumni destinations include IBM and BskyB. Her research has always been into closing the semantic gap between people and machines via novel methods in human factors and she has spent the last ten years working with EEG and other biometrics to perfect the art of Cognitive UXD for full for stack, human centred digital transformation, that is, the automation and migration of values of all kinds, from the real to the virtual and back again, in order to guide valuable & ethical singularities in IoT, robotics & immersive environments.
